Joe! Your Cup is Alive!

gijoe_slurpeeIn conjunction with G.I. Joe coming to theaters soon, 4 premium lenticular Slurpee® cups produced by IGH Solutions are coming to 7-Eleven®. The cup’s new lenticular printing technology allows it to capture a full-motion video clip on the cup’s label.

Each collectible Slurpee cup (available this month at 7-Eleven stores while supplies last) features one of four characters — heroes Duke and Snake Eyes and anti-heroes Storm Shadow and Baroness — with each character appearing fully animated as a result of a new lenticular printing technology patented by IGH Solutions.

Since its release more than 40 years ago, G.I. Joe has been one of the most sought-after collectible toys for generations of kids (and adults). For the first time, collectors can own a mini-scene of animated film footage captured on a cup. The full-motion video effect is capable of capturing up to 24 frames of animation.

“The entertainment industry loves this printing technology for its ability to mimic sophisticated film imagery on movie merchandise,” said Ed Dedman, product manager for drinkware at IGH Solutions. “Retailers love it because it drives collectors into their stores and generates buzz in the action film merchandise blogosphere. We believe these one-second action-scenes enhance the collectability of these G.I. Joe Slurpee cups.”

Doctor Who – The Complete First Series || Doctor Who: The Complete Fourth Series|| Doctor Who Encyclopedia (BBC Hardcover)

You can’t spend much time in the SciFi community without hearing about the cult classic – Doctor Who. This British television series originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and is listed in the Guinness World Records as being the longest-running science fiction television show in the world. While there’s much to say about the first 8 doctors, this review is only going to focus on the 2005 relaunch of the series, affectionally known as the New Who. While it’s nice to see the original Doctor Who, it’s not necessary if you want to start with the more current series.

Doctor Who revolves around the adventures of a mysterious alien time-traveler known only as “the Doctor”. The Doctor travels in a blue 1950s police box which is, in reality, a space and time ship called the TARDIS. The Doctor can travel alone, but a majority of the series he has “a companion”. A usually human traveling with the Doctor through time and space aiding the Doctor in saving the universe, solving problems, fighting aliens and righting wrongs.

Music Review: Sub Pop’s Cybersex Digital Sampler (2009) [CWG Review]

subpopI’ve started doing some album reviews for CWG and I thought you guys might enjoy. Make sure to read the entire review over at CWG! – Tabz

Reviewing a compilation CD is a bit like reviewing a cheerleading squad. You have to not only score the relative hotness of each girl as an individual, but how they work together as a team. Then you must factor in things such as presentation, costumes and pep. So when I sat down to review Sub Pop’s Cybersex Digital Sampler (2009), I was a bit overwhelmed, but in a good way.

Sub Pop Records is a Prolific Seattle label that has a quirky, buck-the-system attitude to making music, as evidenced by their album. You won’t hear a sugary pop song on this album, but instead you’ll hear compelling lyrics, complex rhythms and tambourines. Yes, I’ve got a thing for tambourines, so sue me.

First up on the album is “Strictly Rule” by the band Vetiver. This is probably one of my favorite songs on the entire sampler. I love the incorporation of 70’s style rock with a smooth vocal that gives it a simple but profound sound. The lyrics are perfect and I love how they turn common phrases (“Once chased now this bitter taste as I swallow my pride…”).

Why You Should Watch Due South

Buy Due South: The Ultimate Collection – Three Complete Seasons on Amazon || Buy Due South: The Original Television Soundtrack on Amazon || Buy Due South, Vol. II: The Original Television Soundtrack on Amazon || Download Ride Forever from Amazon

Due South is an award-winning Canadian television police comedy-drama created by Paul Haggis and produced by Alliance Communications, that first aired in 1994. Due South started off as a made-for-TV movie that aired on CTV in Canada and CBS in the United States. After higher-than-anticipated ratings, Due South was turned into a reoccurring TV series – making it the first Canadian-made series to have a prime-time slot on a major US network. The show lasted for four seasons and, despite the show’s rocky reception in the US, it gained world-wide acclaim and has been show in over 150 different countries since first airing.

Due South follows the story of a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer – Constable Benton Fraser (played by Paul Gross), who conveniently reiterates the plot of the show several times throughout the series, especially in later seasons when he says, “My name is Constable Benton Fraser. I first came to Chicago on the trail of my father’s killers and, for reasons that do not need exploring at this juncture, I’ve remained attached as liaison to the Canadian consulate.”

Fraser is the epitome of the stereotypical Mountie – loyal, kind, dependable, truthful and dogged. Many times during the series Fraser’s idealism is tested against Chicago’s corruption and criminal world.
