Vampire Diaries Season 2 DVD Review – Special Features

Special Features are something that makes or break any DVD set, especially for TV. The special features included add to the overall valube of a show that you may be able to get cheaper digitally. Recently I’ve been kind of disappointed by the lack of great features on DVDs that I’ve bought. Thankfully, The Vampire Diaries Season 2 DVDs have some really great features and is well worth buying the set for.

My favorite is “Her Own Worst Enemy…” which goes into explaining how they do split screen scenes (when one actor plays two characters in the same shot). Especially in Season 2 where in one episode Nina Dobrev has to play 12 pages of script Katherine and Elena just talking to each other. For Buffy fans it’s kind of like Dopplegangland when Aly had to play four different characters.

There’s also an amazingly fun “The Perfect Love Triangle…” that explains all of the romances on the show (with a fun little ‘family tree’ style chart) with actor/crew interviews explaining them. Then they try and explain Elena’s family tree. It’s freaking hilarious.

There’s also a bunch of small features on the werewolves and their mythology, a fantastic gag reel, deleted/unaired scenes, and a commentary on the pivotal episode “Masquerade.”

Vampire Diaries: Is it True?

One of the things I’ve really enjoyed about Season 2 of the Vampire Diaries is the introduction of werewolves. I know, it’s getting cliche to have vampires and werewolves together, but there’s a fun story line for werewolves (as seen in the clip above). Though werewolves were hinted at (and finally mentioned) in Season 1, they don’t make their first appearance until Season 2’s “Bad Moon Rising.” I like the different twists in mythology (like the idea that werewolves are older than vampires) and werewolves make their impression known on Season 2. I also love that they actually look like wolves (try as you might human-shaped werewolves always wind up looking campy.

Vampire Diaries Season 2 on DVD – Lovers are for ‘Shippers

Vampire Diaries in Season 2 has enough love triangles and romances to keep any ‘Shipper (people who are fans of a certain relationship) extremely happy. They put together a lot of couples that I couldn’t really see together and some that we were pretty positive would fall apart quickly. Of course, the main lovers triangle is our lead female Elena and the vampire brothers Stefan and Damon.

It’s no deep mystery that I love Vampire Diaries mainly for Damon, the smoldering hot Ian Somerhalder was one of my favorite actors on Lost and he still brings the charm — in a very vulnerable bad boy way — to CW’s Vampire Diaries. Damon reveals in the second series that he loves Elena, but for most of the series it’s clear that Elena is conflicted and, despite a moving moment in the finale, it’s still unclear if her love is deep enough to last.

Rooting for a particular relationship is part of the fun for a lot of fans. Unrequited love, portrayed love, even couples that were together and broke up still have fans who root for them to get back together and for the world to be right again. So here I go rooting for the couple I’m sure is doomed to fail.

I’m also a fan of Jeremy Gilbert & Bonnie Bennet. Bonnie seems to not quite fit in any other pairing I can see (though those who suggest Bonnie and Damon just make me laugh). So glad Jeremy’s character grew up this last season.

How about you? Who are you rooting for in Season 3?

The Vampire Diaries: Quotable Quotes

(Photo: CW)

I don’t know about you, but I love funny/sarcastic and just plain profound quotes from my favorite TV shows. The Vampire Diaries has some great ones thanks to the dueling brothers Damon and Stefan. Damon plays the perfect sarcastic, dark and teasingly evil bad guy to Stefan’s nearly Superman pure goodness.

Here’s just a few of my faves:

Damon (to Stefan): It’s Founder’s Day. I’m here to eat cotton candy and steal your girl. (“Founder’s Day”)

Damon: I do believe in killing the messenger. Know why? It sends a message. (“Isobel”)

Elena: I’m not gonna be one of those pathetic girls whose world stops just because of some guy. (“You’re Undead to Me”) [This one cracked me up, especially in light of Buffy, Twilight, and other tween vampire novels]

Damon: We’re a team. We could travel the world together. We could try out for The Amazing Race! (“The Turning Point”)

Review Snippet: Season 1 of the Vampire Diaries on DVD

I’ll be the first to admit it, I was skeptical when I first watching Vampire Diaries. It seemed a little too much teen angst and not enough compelling characters for me to stick with it. Apparently the series developer, Kevin Williamson, thought so too. He had little interest at first because he thought it sounded too similar to other vampire stories, but after reading the books he said: “I began to realize that it was a story about a small town, about that town’s underbelly and about what lurks under the surface.” I have to agree. I too was surprised at how much it brought the plot twists and surprises. Though you may be tempted to call it a Twilight spin off — don’t. The books started back in 1991 (even before Buffy). That said, romance abounds, but the show still manages to bring the scary.

One of the scenes that had me me sppoked was early on when Damon (played by the ever adorable Ian Somerhalder who you may know as Boone on Lost) snaps the neck of a victim after nursing her back to health. It’s done so casually it made my eyes pop. [To save the spoilers I won’t say who dies].

The killer scene happens in the sixth episode Lost Girls (only well-establishing in my mind the idea that you should give a TV series at least 6 episodes before you stop watching). Other great scenes include several great death scenes, some fantastic chase/hunt scenes and more that I don’t want to spoil.

Rewatching the series on DVD has only made me enjoy the show more. The DVDs, set to be released on the 31st, have over 8 hours of special features including a free download of the audio book of The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening. Another thing I LOVED about the DVDs is that the package listing of each episode contained warnings not to listen to the commentary because of season spoilers! Finally, someone is thinking.

Make sure you pre-order your copy and enjoy the vampy goodness this series has before Season 2 starts this fall!
